Frozen in Time.....
Montclair, NJ - May 20 through 26 marks the annual Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week in the United States. This year's theme is STRONGER TOGETHER.
The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) was instrumental in establishing EMS Week when President Gerald Ford declared November 3 – 10, 1974 as the first “National Emergency Medical Services Week.”
This annual observance continued for four more years and was then reintroduced by ACEP in 1982 and moved to September. A final move to May was done in ten years later.
National EMS Week brings together communities and medical personnel to honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine's "front line."
In May of 2011, Montclair Ambulance Unit celebrated EMS Week by opening our doors to the public so they can learn how MAU serves the community and what day to day life as an EMT is like.
Pictured here, Training Officer Julie Martin, leads a tour of school children through an ambulance and explains the various pieces of equipment the MAU uses to care for the sick and injures. Of course, no tour is complete without some lucky kids getting to sit behind the wheel and sound the siren!
First established by President Gerald Ford in in 1974, National Emergency Medical Services Week, affords local EMS providers to opportunity to educate the community on the various functions of EMS and to honor all those who serve on medicine's "front line".
EMS Week 2018: Stronger Together, will run from May 20 through May 26 and includes individual "theme" days including Monday - Education, Tuesday - Safety Tuesday, Wednesday - EMS for Children Day, Thursday - Save-A-Life (CPR and Stop the Bleed) and Friday - EMS Recognition Day.
